Many teachers use Facebook, Yahoogroups, Twitter and other web resources for teaching.  While we do not discourage the use of these resources in learning, we want our students and faculty to conduct online learning activities in a safe and advertisement-free environment to lessen distractions, monitor compliance to University policies and have access to a facilitate that is specifically designed for online learning which can be called virtual learning environments (VLE) or course management systems (CMS).

There are many kinds of VLEs and CMS's but we decided to choose one that allows us to cost-efficiently manage online learning through technologies such as cloud hosting and social media.  We also wanted to make sure that students and teachers can access the VLE using whatever devices are available to them.  This makes Schoolbook more accessible and more collaborative in nature.
